73: Creating change in a segregated event industry ft Jason Brown

Summary

On the show with me today I have my dear event production friend, Jason Brown, a multi-faced individual, proud of his almost two decades in the #eventproduction industry as a senior video engineer, LED engineer, projection specialist, and video project manager,

all the while hustling like no other, pursuing many business and personal opportunities, such as building a real-estate empire in Las Vegas, competing in martial and body-building competitions, advancing #diversity #equity #inclusivity change and awareness wherever he goes,

I mean this guy is amazing and seems to be doing it all, and I am super stoked to have had him on the show.

I’ve personally had the pleasure of working side by side with Jason on a large project down in So Cal and seeing him in action, tackling challenges head-on, troubleshooting on the fly while keeping his cool, acting like the professional he is, while also being so much fun to be around.

Honesty and integrity, along with determination and dedication are indeed Jason’s guiding principles in all aspects of his life. So let’s bring him and get started.

  • Tune into this unique brand new episode in which we demystify show prep, changing trends in video production while also tackling the tough subject of diversity and inclusivity, the challenges and barriers many of us still face in event production, but also the opportunities for growth that as event planner and producers we have to increase representation and build a better community for our events, but also for our event production teams and labor crews.

Currently, Sarah is the face and content creator of MPI.tv and works with MPl’s publication, The Meeting Professional to produce year-round video content. In light of the latest Rant released on May 1st – which has gotten a lot of attention and many direct messages from #womeninAV who have dealt with #toxicmasculinity once or twice in their life, I am so excited to release this episode and the topic discussed which embodies confidence and competence, a sure way to put toxicity down on its paws. Sarah Soliman is an amazing role model, someone that has had to pave her own path and overcome, inspiring and mentoring more women to do the same, and so I have no doubt that you will love today’s episode!

Rant #7: Toxic masculinity on display in AV event production

Summary

Toxic masculinity refers to the notion that some people’s idea of “manliness” perpetuates domination, manipulation, and aggression.

Ok, this Rant literally took me several months of consideration if I should release it or not. It’s not an easy topic to address nor to talk about. In the best-case scenario, I expect to be misunderstood, maybe my motives to be called into question for releasing this episode, and for my experiences to be downplayed. Let it be so then because I know my experience is not an isolated one, and there are many women in the AV event production industry that have quietly carried the weight of their experiences and stories alone, not having the courage to speak up, or being afraid of the consequences to be paid for speaking up.

The truth is, there will always be consequences, that’s the reality of the times we live in, some consequences will be larger than others, some more impactful than others. I am ready to take my share by releasing this episode. You, the listener, be the judge of it and if you do identify even slightly with what I am sharing, please add your voice to the choir. Nobody should have to feel alone when sharing parts of their story.

Let’s be there for each other!

Rant #5: Can color influence our moods and emotions?

Summary

“Colors, like features, follow the changes of the emotions” Pablo Picasso

Did you ever feel anxious in a yellow room?

Does the color blue make you feel calm and relaxed?

In the 5th rant brought to you by Events: demystified Podcast, I’m making the case for color and what a powerful communication tool it is, and how it can be used to signal action, influence mood, and even influence physiological reactions.

I am also sharing how I am totally fond of this one particular color that inspired higher thinking in me during a situation when I was about to unleash a nuclear amount of passion onto someone that had it coming for them.

But I didn’t and I’m so proud of myself, and I’m possibly crediting my self-control to this one color that you might wanna surround yourself with, during stressful situations.

Also, this if not news, artists and interior designers have long believed to be true: color can dramatically affect moods, feelings, and emotions. However, your feelings about color are often deeply personal and rooted in your own experience or culture.

Tune in to find out how this certain color has inspired a level of generosity beyond anything else I’ve ever seen before!

64: Trade Shows and virtual, how well do they mix ft Nick Aldinger (IBL Events)

Summary

Almost to the date, beginning of 2020 I was sitting down, in my studio, with IBL Events co-founder, Anna Marie Aldinger recording Episode #10 and discussing trade shows and the news of this new virus that we didn’t know much about at the time… How much has our world has changed since then?

And so, circling back on the show today I have Nick Aldinger, the CEO of IBL Events, one of Idaho’s largest producers of trade shows and conferences, and we get to answer that question, as well as explore a few interesting topics during today’s conversation, such as leadership lessons learned during challenging times, embracing change and finding a new business stream during a time when most event organizers, especially in the tradeshow space, struggled to stay afloat, and how do trade shows perform in the virtual event space.

Rant #4: My Event Is Better Than Yours

“I will not reason and compare: my business is to create.” – William Blake

In the 4th rant brought to you by Events: demystified Podcast, I am getting a bit annoyed at everyone that pretends that their event is better than all the other events out there, regardless if it’s coming from a planner, a producer, a supplier, vendor, organizer or client. If you’ve been in the industry for a while like I have, the chances are there’s nothing new under the sun and you’ve seen it all.

Living under the presumption that you are the only one capable to plan, produce, execute said event, and making it so unique, the aliens would like to get your number, it’s egotism and arrogance.

Somewhere down the line I also go into event platforms that are just as presumptions and once you get me started there, who knows where else I’ll go?

Guess you’ll have to tune in and find out!

And side note, the NEW series: “She said WHAT? The Rant Series” –  is where I go off the caff and say it as it is, tackling anything and everything in the AV production, technology, and event industry that not a lot of people are willing to talk about.

RANT #03: Must be aware of our choice of words

Summary

“Words are free. It’s how you use them that may cost you.” – Unknown

In this 3rd rant brought to you by Events: demystified Podcast, I am repeating myself, not because I’ve got nothing better to do, but because I just ran into a similar situation in which the AV supplier I was working with used the “AV guys” term several times during our conversation, even as I was visibly annoyed by how unaware they were and I couldn’t wait to explain why them using those were in that context felt like an insult to me and all (not many, but still – and why is that I wonder?!) the amazing female AV techs that I have worked with for the past almost two decades of AV production. And if I must repeat myself like a broken record until everyone gets the memo, let it be so!

And side note, the NEW series: “She said WHAT? The Rant Series” –  is where I go off the caff and say it as it is, tackling anything and everything in the AV production, technology, and event industry that not a lot of people are willing to talk about.

RANT #02: Flash-news: your crystal ball is broken

“Trying to predict the future is a loser’s game.” – Ken Liu

In this 2nd rant brought to you by Events: demystified Podcast, I am questioning the logic behind some of the event decisions made to go back to in-person full-steam ahead with what seemed to have been little considerations to how the attendees might feel about it, especially the ones who are not yet comfortable to join large gatherings, yet are left without an option because your event does not give them one.

I must profess from the get-go and say that some of my passion so visibly expressed does not mean harm nor ill intentions, it is my way of expressing a ton of feelings and sentiments on any particular topic which I feel strongly about. It might come across as belligerence,  but rest assured, it is purely genuine passion because the NEW series: “She said WHAT? The Rant Series” –  is where I go off the caff and say it as it is, tackling anything and everything in the AV production, technology, and event industry that not a lot of people are willing to talk about.

This podcast is brought to you by Tree-Fan Events, a woman-owned boutique event production agency  – and your host is Anca Trifan.

RANT #01: Who the heck have I become?

“Who in the world am I? Ah, that’s the great puzzle.” Lewis Carroll, Alice in Wonderland

Welcome to Events: demystified Podcast‘s NEW series: “She said WHAT? The Rant Series” –  where I go off the caff and say it as it is, tackling anything and everything in the AV production, technology, and event industry that not a lot of people are willing to talk about.

The Rant Series is short and spicy, comes out twice a month, in between the more tamed interview-style episodes. Today I’m tackling the hard task of figuring out what the hell did I turn from being pretty much a rockstar to a corporate ‘suit’, and was this turn a good or a bad one.

Stay tuned as I shared, never shared before, spicy details from my ‘rockstar days’, all the way back to my radio Dj-ing days. I think you will find this episode quite entertaining.

55: 2021 Year in “Rearview” Thoughts ft Anca Trifan (V)

As we approach the final days of 2021, I am incredibly grateful, inspired by, and proud of the remarkable people who make up the event industry.

In this episode, I will cover seven main takeaways from the many episodes recorded and conversations had, one of the main takeaways being:

Don’t forget the things you’ve learned in 2021″.

But I have also taken the liberty to go somewhat rogue and expressed some of my professional challenges, something I have never talked about on this podcast.

This past year has tested me in so many ways, from losing family members to COVID to losing young girlfriends to cancer, to having to rebuild my business from the ground up, but it has also tested us as industry professionals in ways other people did not experience nor understand.

This has not been easy, and however, as I sit and reflect today, I remain in awe of each of our clients, partners, listeners, and our event industry as a whole.

We had all hoped that we would launch into 2022 with excitement, hope, and positivity…  ready to set fear and uncertainty aside.

We are far more prepared for the challenges that lay ahead, and while it can be scary and frustrating to be faced again with yet another uncertainty, this is a fight we will not lose.

Every event I’ve worked on requires a diverse team in order for that project to be successful, and many events turned out to be a 1000-piece jigsaw puzzle; and in order for all the pieces to fit in the right place, we must have the right partners around us in order to create pictures and tell stories that create impactful and memorable experiences.

Once that happens, what a gift that is, to our clients, and all those in attendance that are impacted tremendously.

So, while it may not be how we believed 2021 would end and 2022 would unfold, we remain hopeful that this is just another bump in the road.

Thank you for your commitment to my small but fierce production agency and to this podcast.

My wish for each of you is that these last days of this year, and the first of 2022 find you surrounded by those whom you love and fill your heart with joy: your family, friends, and even colleagues, celebrating what is most important and what you’re passionate about.

Without you, I could not do what we are doing over here. Your ongoing loyalty, your feedback, and your donations are what fuels our efforts, and we thank you in advance for your continued support.

Happy New Year Friends!

Your Host,

Anca Trifan

I am exceptionally giddy today to be talking about a topic near and dear to my heart: calling a virtual or a hybrid event as a show director. So today I’ve invited Heather Sharpe, a multi-award-winning Event Producer/ Director/ Planner, an instructor for the world-renowned Event Leadership Institute, and we’ll first define a few important terms as far as event production roles go, and then get into the meat of:

41: Experience Design for Virtual + Hybrid Events ft John Pistotti

Summary

This is “Events: demystified” brought to you by Tree-Fan Events with your host, Anca. While the work of a good planner is to make sure the event goes off without a hitch, the work of great event designers is to make that event memorable by allowing the creative juices to start flowing freely in order to create the feel, look, and atmosphere that not only matches the brand or the cause but also impresses attendees and leaves them with a positive memory long after the event is over. With that thought in mind, join me for a fun conversation around experience design solutions for virtual and hybrid events with experience architect, John Pistotti of Endless Events.

A few fun facts about John:
– his first job was as banquet staff for parties at the Playboy Mansion, LA
– he worked as a sushi chef,
– he was also an adventure guide leading trips up Half Dome in Yosemite, midnight snowshoeing in Lake Tahoe, and mountain biking in Santa Cruz.

Summary

This is “Events: demystified” brought to you by Tree-Fan Events with your host, Anca. HUGE honor to feature Julius Solaris on today’s episode – now Marketing VP at HOPIN, during the recording of this episode, head of engagement at Swapcard, previously known as the founder and editor in chief of EventMB, acquired in 2019 by Skift, the largest and most influential travel media company worldwide.

the challenge of engagement with virtual and now hybrid events,

– we take a peek into Julius’s crystal ball to find out what the next event trends might be for Fall of 2021/Spring of 2022,

– how to best use the tech tools at hand tobetter design a memorable event experience,

– and of course, mental health and what does Julius does to relax and keep his mind sharp.

37: The Makings of Great Communities IRL & Hybrid with Dan Berger (Social Tables Founder)

Summary

This is “Events: demystified” brought to you by Tree-Fan Events and I’m your host, Anca. On today’s episode I have Dan Berger, the Founder and former CEO of Social Tables – and if you’ve been in events for at least a day, you’ve most likely heard and used Social Tables for your events – which he sold to Cvent in October of 2018. Prior to Social Tables, Dan worked in management consulting and served as a member of Congress.

During today’s episode we get to demystify the idea of community, what does it mean for a post-pandemic world, what does it look like in the marketplace and ultimately, how do you build it for events moving forward with IRL & Hybrid.

In Dan’s own words: “Belonging serves as an overall indicator of whether or not you’ve successfully built a real Community. Communities should feel exclusive to those who are a part of them. Why? Part of who we are is defined by who we aren’t. When everyone belongs, no one belongs.”

Stay tuned for additional tips shared by Dan, a true entrepreneur at heart, that left quite a legacy behind at Social Tables.
