110: The Speaker-Poet-TEDx Alumni on a Mission to Educate, Engage & Empower ft Anthony DeMario

Today’s featured guest, Anthony DeMario – “BE YOU” – is something else, he is a Poet-Speaker, Trained Peak Performance Strategist & Learning Experience Architect via Tony Robbins, and Certified Brain Health Strategist with expertise in cultivating educational and engaging experiences, emotion, and storytelling.

During our conversation, straight-out-of-the-gate Ant sprints into one empowering aphorism after another, in an engaging conversation that will make your heart and head spin from all the things being said. He has worked with leading behavioral scientists to develop enriching learning experiences, is an experienced People & Culture Strategist with an insatiable hunger to stretch who he is and what he gives, and applies science and art to his exuberant, “lightening in a bottle” delivery style.

Just to give you a ‘taste’ of what that “lighting in a bottle” is, in the first minutes he spits out so much goodness, you better take some notes:

  • The sea rips and roars and the surface, yet underneath it all there’s stillness
  • The path is not there, the path is made by walking it
  • Be original or die a copy “You were born an original, don’t die a copy” –  Einstein
  • Follow your curiosity, don’t labor the art, explore it
  • Language is the wardrobe of our experience
  • Creativity is just taking things from the past, blending, breaking, and bending them into something novel
  • We must use our passion to serve something bigger than us
  • Chase the dreams that keep you feeling alive
  • Learn, live it, grow it, give it philosophy, yet we can only take ppl as far as they’re willing to grow
  • What we focus on, we get pulled towards, we tend to feel
  • Meaning shapes our experience, it’s a tool we all have
  • See it as it is, see it brighter, see it through
  • “Rock bottom became the solid foundation on which I rebuilt my life.” – J.K. Rowling

Anthony was “built” in NY, and has a colorful background of experience & training which allows him to be versatile in his ways to educate, engage & empower people to take action. He is passionate, empathetic, and infectious, and will leave your people feeling energized to take massive action and gifts them strategies to follow through on.

During our conversation today, Anthony gives extensive advice to anyone new to Speaking & Storytelling, may that be a Speaker, Presenter, or Emcee. We talk about finding a purpose & missing and get into the nitty-gritty science of understanding the ingredients of emotion.

106: The future is all about photorealism and data visualization ft Amy Gile

Today I have the honor of talking with Amy Gile, CEO of Silverdraft Entrepreneurship and high-performance graphics technology.

Amy began her career in the media and entertainment industry in multiple aspects of the industry, including actor and producer.  Amy identified a need for a faster solution and workflow for the entire production and the artist. The demands of rendering, animation, and visual effects required a sophisticated approach to computing.

Amy knew there was a better, faster way to bring complex content to the masses.  She co-founded Silverdraft and has dedicated herself to enabling and accelerating the visualization workflow with complete solutions for various industries, including Automotive, AEC, and Media and Entertainment.  Amy is a TEDx speaker and is passionate about technology and pushing what’s possible.

PS: I ended up ordering myself one of the plate machines Amy was mentioning that’s primordial to her physical fitness. She was right, it’s pretty rad.

105: The Tinder for #eventprofs is not what you might think it is ft Merijn Van Buuren

With me on the air today I have Merijn van Buuren, Founder of Event Mender,  on a mission to make the world a better place together 🌐 by developing a tool that takes out all the guesswork for event organizers. This tool is a fully customizable one-stop shop for organizing wildly successful and profitable events, from speaker acquisition, and marketing to AV services and virtual platforms all in one central place.

We’re going to be touching on this tool as well as the importance of finding the right event platform, the future of events in 2023, what it looks like to be bringing the industry together, event tech, monetization, engagement, building a business, and much more.

A few more things about Merijn. Whilst helping physical event professionals embrace virtual events during the pandemic, Merijn realized that evaluating different platforms was taking way too much time and that there must be a better way to do this to help even more event professionals.

101: Start the new year as a Fit Wholesome New You ft Jason Brown (FitMeForMe)

Welcome to a brand new podcast season, a season that is focused on a much-needed topic: Mental and Physical Fitness.

Why? Because of how important this kind of fitness is for any event professional out there that is faced with challenges and needs to build resilience as well as the ability to think clearly and make decisions effectively and efficiently.

Mental fitness, just like physical fitness is just as important and should not be neglected because it helps us prioritize and understand that just as we can improve our physical health by moving our bodies, we can improve our mental health by strengthening our minds.

Taking steps to build our mental fitness enhances our ability to cope with stress and improves our physical health, productivity at work, relationships, and overall happiness.

Join me and my good friend, Jason Brown as we kick off the season with this first episode during which we demystify our natural bodybuilding journeys in the competitive and many times unfair world of fitness, and how that has helped us professionally and why staying physically and mentally fit is important for #eventprofs and #meetingprofs.  So, hang tight, strap on, and enjoy the ride!

98: What is teleprompting and how it can add value to your events ft Michelle Michelson (Prompster)

“Rehearsals are SO Important”, “Generational gaps in tech crews can be so toxic at times”, “Power struggles behind the scenes are real”, “If you’re working an event, be there because you care, not just to collect a paycheck”…

In one of the – sadly – few last episodes of the current running season “Women Behind The Scenes in Events and Event Productions” I have the honor of talking to Michelle Michelson, Teleprompter Operator and owner of Prompsterand discuss some really difficult topics to address but much needed.

Michelle was so gracious to get out of her comfort zone and join me on air, staying open and authentic in our conversation. She is my kind of woman in events, a small business owner that just like me, is organically grown and hustling to forge her own path in events.

She’s from NYC with a whole lot of teleprompter expertise and branching out the business to include graphics operating, content, and production managing.  She’s been working in events and production for over ten years, starting out in NYC and moving west to Colorado to take on more travel event work and expand the company.

Tune into this episode as we address:

– the pros and cons of running a business remotely,

– networking and building a community in a unique niche,

– growing and expanding while taking on new roles within the events industry and pushing out of your comfort zones,

– crew culture and what is like being one of the younger techs on the crew and a female on top of everything else, working on events with gen z / x and boomers, and what conflict resolution looks like,

– innovative uses of prompter for events + production.

95: Strong Back, Soft Front ft Jeniffer Bello (JB Experiences)

One of my favorite upcoming featured guests highlighted during the current Events: demystified Podcast‘s “𝐖𝐨𝐦𝐞𝐧 𝐁𝐞𝐡𝐢𝐧𝐝 𝐓𝐡𝐞 𝐒𝐜𝐞𝐧𝐞𝐬 𝐈𝐧 𝐄𝐯𝐞𝐧𝐭𝐬 𝐚𝐧𝐝 𝐄𝐯𝐞𝐧𝐭 𝐏𝐫𝐨𝐝𝐮𝐜𝐭𝐢𝐨𝐧𝐬” season, is Jeniffer Bello, CMP, one of my newest friends made during the several industry trade shows, conferences, and FAM trips that we kept running into each other, which made it feel like it was meant to be, a friendship match made in heaven.

Jen is my kind of girl: different, bold, and confident in her own skin.

She doesn’t apologize for who she is and she doesn’t dim her light just because she might not be everyone’s cup of tea.

Talking to her made me feel like I am talking to my twin self and I for once, felt like I belonged. And for someone like me, feeling like belonging to something or someone, is a HUGE deal. So, without further ado, here’s Jen’s bio.

————-

Jeniffer Bello, CMP – President and Executive Producer; Experiential Design, Meeting Planning with a Purpose, Production Management, Destination Sourcing, and everything in between.

UNIQUE FACTS

  • Her multicultural background and experience allow her to design and produce experiences for diverse audiences. As a minority, she understands the value of inclusion and brings that into her meetings and events,
  • She went to school for Scenic and Lighting Design and worked in the technical side of theatre and media production for a good period of time, and she continues to work in Media Production (short films, documentaries, promotional videos, and reels) and every once in a while likes to work on a play,
  • She has a strong background in Digital Marketing and Branding and now uses this knowledge to help brands create unique experiences for her attendees that fully represent them. It also allows her to always have the guests at the center of the experience.

Rant #11: Keeping healthy and fit during long show/event days

“You will never know your limits unless you push yourself to them”.

As the world of events started to open back up, many #eventprofs (including myself) have been packing their bags a whole lot this summer after an almost two-year downtime, and so re-learning what staying healthy while on the road and long events days remains a big priority, especially amid COVID-19.

Tune into this brand new rant as I am demystifying the complex dilemma of keeping healthy, eating healthy, and sticking to a fitness routine during long show days and weeks that run one into each other.

Throw a fitness bodybuilding competition into the mix, and let’s see how can one handle it…

PS: Do send my way your positive vibes, prayers, etc, and wish me luck as I am deep in Prep this week, in the midst of Peak Week, and I will be traveling to the WA state for the Olympic Natural INBF competition that will take place on Sept 3rd. A lot of hard work went into the package I’ll be presenting on stage.

RANT #10: Competent vs Likable – can a boss female be both?

Summary

Women, unlike men, are rarely perceived to be both competent and likable.”

Today’s RANT dives deep into the likability dilemma for women leaders or boss ladies, competence vs liability, a topic very much inspired by a recent TED talk I listened to, as well as some real-world case studies and recent event experiences from the world of AV event productions.

You can fill a room with studies on leadership that hail the importance of being a likable, honest, caring, and modest boss, but the truth is, as much as we talk about it, in the marketplace, that’s not what people want most. When people have a chance to choose whom to work with, and their own success depends in part on those people, a new study finds that cold competence becomes more important and likability less so.

When money is on the line, in other words, most people would rather work for a very competent jerk than a nice but less competent boss.

Tune into this brand new RANT to find out where I fall on this debate continuum and if you agree with me, or disagree.

RANT #09: Saving Your Bacon

No expectations, no disappointments.” – Unknown

Have you ever attended an event where the expectation was so high and you were left with this yucky aftertaste, because that was not what all that hype was made about, and what you experienced instead was a watered-down version of an event you had such high hopes for?

Or, you couldn’t attend an event and you were so excited to attend virtually, just to be there and partake in the experience, even if digitally, only for the stream to fail, the audio to be crappy, or the networking to be inexistent because the chat was disabled and the platform didn’t allow for any other type of interaction. If you’ve experienced any of these scenarios, stay tuned, we’re diving in there for one-of-a-kind Rant!

RANT #8 Live Event Production vs Virtual Event Broadcast

Summary

The beginning of wisdom is the definition of terms.― Socrates.

Let me ask you a question. What do you think of when you hear Live Event Production? Does that ring the same in your mind, with Virtual Event Production? Today I am on a rant to discuss the two, and then some. My hope is to demystify the differences that exist between all these digital event terms and where event production intersects with technology to deliver a fantastic event.

So, if you landed on this Rant by mistake, let me assure you: you’re in the right place, you’re taking the time to learn, brush up on your skills, or even develop new skills and lay down a foundation for what could be new opportunities, and I am so glad you’re here, I appreciate you for carving this time and making the time investment for yourself, but also for your team, your clients and the future of your career in the industry.

73: Creating change in a segregated event industry ft Jason Brown

On the show with me today I have my dear event production friend, Jason Brown, a multi-faced individual, proud of his almost two decades in the #eventproduction industry as a senior video engineer, LED engineer, projection specialist, and video project manager,

all the while hustling like no other, pursuing many business and personal opportunities, such as building a real-estate empire in Las Vegas, competing in martial and body-building competitions, advancing #diversity #equity #inclusivity change and awareness wherever he goes,

I mean this guy is amazing and seems to be doing it all, and I am super stoked to have had him on the show.

I’ve personally had the pleasure of working side by side with Jason on a large project down in So Cal and seeing him in action, tackling challenges head-on, troubleshooting on the fly while keeping his cool, acting like the professional he is, while also being so much fun to be around.

Honesty and integrity, along with determination and dedication are indeed Jason’s guiding principles in all aspects of his life. So let’s bring him and get started.

  • Tune into this unique brand new episode in which we demystify show prep, changing trends in video production while also tackling the tough subject of diversity and inclusivity, the challenges and barriers many of us still face in event production, but also the opportunities for growth that as event planner and producers we have to increase representation and build a better community for our events, but also for our event production teams and labor crews.

72: Keep Up so you’re not Kept Out ft Sarah Soliman

With over a decade of experience in Broadcast Journalism and Production, Sarah Soliman brings her producing and reporting experience into her own company, Soliman Productions covering the meetings industry at large, with a team of like-minded creative professionals equipped to respond to all video and photographic requirements. Currently, Sarah is the face and content creator of MPI.tv and works with MPl’s publication, The Meeting Professional to produce year-round video content. Her passion for the industry is also reflected through important industry issues including sexual harassment in meetings and events, working to educate on preventative measures meeting professionals can pro-actively implement into their contingency plans. Sarah hopes to continue inspiring and educating meeting professionals in all facets of their careers through various initiatives she finds great passion in. *

In light of the latest Rant released on May 1st – which has gotten a lot of attention and many direct messages from #womeninAV who have dealt with #toxicmasculinity once or twice in their life, I am so excited to release this episode and the topic discussed which embodies confidence and competence, a sure way to put toxicity down on its paws. Sarah Soliman is an amazing role model, someone that has had to pave her own path and overcome, inspiring and mentoring more women to do the same, and so I have no doubt that you will love today’s episode!

RANT #7: Toxic masculinity on display in AV event production

Toxic masculinity refers to the notion that some people’s idea of “manliness” perpetuates domination, manipulation, and aggression.

Ok, this Rant literally took me several months of consideration if I should release it or not. It’s not an easy topic to address nor to talk about. In the best-case scenario, I expect to be misunderstood, maybe my motives to be called into question for releasing this episode, and for my experiences to be downplayed. Let it be so then because I know my experience is not an isolated one, and there are many women in the AV event production industry that have quietly carried the weight of their experiences and stories alone, not having the courage to speak up, or being afraid of the consequences to be paid for speaking up.

The truth is, there will always be consequences, that’s the reality of the times we live in, some consequences will be larger than others, some more impactful than others. I am ready to take my share by releasing this episode. You, the listener, be the judge of it and if you do identify even slightly with what I am sharing, please add your voice to the choir. Nobody should have to feel alone when sharing parts of their story.

Let’s be there for each other!

PS: Also, is it confidence or arrogance to admit you’re hotter turning 40 than you were turning 20? I will let you all decide. I promise I’ll be fine either way.
