A CEO Edition Conversation featuring CEO, Dennis Meador
Leadership at the executive level is rarely as clear as it looks from the outside.
In this CEO Edition of Events: Demystified, I sat down with Dennis Meador to talk about what leadership actually requires once an organization reaches that point. The conversation explored the evolution from founder energy to executive discipline, the pressure of leading associations and event driven organizations, and the reality that many CEOs eventually face a moment where the way they have been leading is no longer sustainable.
Dennis spoke candidly about burnout, rebuilding leadership capacity, and the structural clarity required to move an organization forward.
This was not a conversation about quick fixes or leadership theory. It was about what happens when CEOs are forced to rethink how they lead.
The New CEO vs the Dinosaur CEO
In this moment of the conversation, Dennis responds directly to the question: What does being a CEO mean him?
He does not romanticize the role. He reframes it.
Leadership, in his view, has moved away from authoritarian, top down control. For decades, executives were respected for status, credentials, and scale. But as he points out, society has watched too many leaders fall from those pedestals to still believe in that model.
What replaces it is not softer leadership. It is more intentional leadership.
Dennis describes the outdated CEO as one who intimidates, threatens, and governs through fear. That leader, in his words, is a dinosaur from a bygone era.
He speaks candidly about sitting down with his directors and asking direct questions. What are your goals? What are your financial goals? Is this role a stepping stone for you?
There is no ego in that conversation. There is alignment.
For Dennis, executive maturity means recognizing that people are not extensions of a company’s ambition. They have ambitions of their own. The role of a CEO is not to extract performance. It is to create shared momentum by aligning vision.
The distinction is subtle but profound. The dinosaur CEO demands loyalty. The new CEO earns commitment.
Clarity Is the Difference Between Momentum and Burnout
Dennis speaks about communication not as a personality trait, but as infrastructure.
As organizations grow more complex, clarity becomes structural. Without it, even strong teams begin to strain under invisible friction.
What stands out is how deliberately he thinks about words. He avoids referring to people as employees and instead calls them teammates.
It may sound small, but language shapes hierarchy, and hierarchy shapes behavior. When his team calls him “sir,” he immediately levels the tone saying, just call me Dennis or DM.
That is not informality for the sake of culture. It is a signal. Authority does not require distance.
The conversation also touches on something more uncomfortable. Many leaders avoid hard conversations until the cost of avoidance multiplies. By the time tension surfaces, it has already spread.
Burnout is often framed as workload. Here, it is framed as misalignment left unaddressed.
Clarity, in Dennis’s view, is not about motivational messaging. It is about early correction, shared understanding, and the discipline to speak before silence becomes dysfunctional.
The Mic Drop Moment
Burnout is rarely caused by hard work alone. It is often the byproduct of unclear priorities and a leadership model that confuses control with responsibility.
Rebuilding as a CEO requires confronting that truth, redesigning how decisions are made, and accepting that clarity is not a communication tactic but a structural commitment to protecting both the organization and the people inside it.
What This Episode Reveals About Being a CEO in Event Technology
Leadership at this level is rarely about charisma. It is about governance, alignment, and sustained responsibility.
Dennis spoke openly about the realities of working with boards, managing expectations, and scaling responsibly. Associations in particular operate within layered accountability structures. The CEO answers not only to financial performance, but to mission, membership, and long term viability. That complexity demands more than energy. It demands structure.
There is also the uncomfortable truth that many leaders outgrow their original leadership style. What worked at one stage of growth can become the bottleneck at the next. The discipline to reassess, redesign, and sometimes rebuild from scratch is what separates enduring leaders from reactive ones.
For founders and executive directors navigating scale, this is a sobering reminder. Growth without structure increases fragility. Progress without clarity increases burnout. Technology without intention increases noise.
If you work in event technology, lead event teams, or make decisions where reliability and innovation collide, this episode will resonate.
