207: The CEO Who Will Not Sugarcoat Success

A CEO Edition Conversation with Cindy Y. Lo

Some careers are carefully planned. Others are built in the aftermath of rejection, disruption, and moments that force a different path.

In this CEO Edition of Events: Demystified, I spoke with Cindy Y. Lo, CEO and Owner of RED VELVET and Strong Events, about what leadership looks like when your career is shaped not by a straight line, but by reinvention.

This conversation isn’t about overnight success. It’s about building through uncertainty, evolving as a founder, and learning when growth requires holding on, and when it requires letting go.

Building from Rejection and Reinventing on Purpose

Cindy’s entry into entrepreneurship wasn’t part of a master plan. It came after rejection, after being turned down for roles she believed would be her way into the industry following 9/11. What started as a pivot became RED VELVET, and over time, that “happy accident” turned into a company Cindy would guide through multiple chapters of growth.

She spoke openly about navigating industry disruption, early client validation, and the moments that quietly confirmed she was building something real. Not linear success, but earned confidence. The kind that comes from testing ideas, adjusting course, and surviving moments that force you to rethink everything.

Reinvention, in Cindy’s story, isn’t a response to failure.
It’s a leadership skill.

What Changes When You Become a CEO

As RED VELVET grew and Cindy stepped into leadership at Strong Events, something fundamental shifted. The work stopped being about execution and became about restraint.

Cindy spoke candidly about the transition from doing everything herself to leading through delegation, focus, and trust. Managing multiple companies meant confronting uncomfortable truths: not every decision belongs with the founder, not every problem requires control, and transparency can create friction before it creates alignment.

Growth, she made clear, doesn’t reward leaders who hold tighter.
It rewards those who know what to release.

The Mic Drop Moment

You can’t scale a business if everything still depends on you.

Leadership isn’t about being indispensable.
It’s about building something that can stand without constant intervention.

That realization marks the line between founder and CEO.

What This Episode Reveals About Being a CEO Today

Being a CEO today means accepting that reinvention never stops.

It means:

  • Making peace with the fact that clarity often comes after action
  • Leading through change without pretending certainty
  • Setting boundaries when growth tempts overextension
  • Choosing accountability over control

Cindy’s story reminds us that longevity isn’t built on perfection.

It’s built on the willingness to evolve, again and again.

If you’re leading a business through growth, reinvention, or uncertainty, this episode will feel familiar, and grounding.
